Creating & Managing Product Variations

Created: - Updated:

This article will teach you how to add variations to a single product, as well as how to group single products together to form a variation product.

Variation products may also be referred to as variations, variants, or children.

Creating New Variation Products

1) Add a product

First, go to your Inventory Manager located in the Inventory tab of Sellbrite and select "Add Product". Fill out the Product Information for the Parent Product on this page.

2) Enable "Variations Present"

At the bottom of this page, select "Variations Present" and add your variation values and options.

3) Generate Variations

Once you have added your variation values and options, select "Generate Variations" and then save your product.

Adding Variations to an already existing Product

1) Find your product

The first step is to find your product so you can add variations to it.

2) Go to the Variations tab

This is where your variation products will live. Click Add Variations. You will now begin adding your variation names and values.

3) Enter your variation names and values

Enter your variation names, like "Size" and/or "Color", and click Save.

The first variant (child) will be created out of the product you are currently editing. You can see your current inventory and price now live on this variant.

Enter the variation values for this first variant, and then add any other variations of this product, each with its own unique SKU.

Be sure to be consistent your capitalization and formatting, otherwise certain sales channels may have a problem identifying and grouping your variation listings properly.

Each variant requires its own inventory quantities, and can have its own price.

4) Add a Parent SKU

A Parent SKU is required to keep the children organized together. Parent SKUs have no inventory quantities, as they are not actual inventory items. However, a parent SKU can have a price, which will be the default price for any variation unless otherwise specified.

Creating New Variation Products via CSV

Creating variation products via Sellbrite's Product CSV is super simple.

1) Export Product CSV Template

Go to the Export Products page:

Products > Export > Export Products - Template Only

2) Open your product data file

Download and open the CSV file in Excel or some other spreadsheet application.

3) Study the file

Study the template's example of how a variation product should look in the CSV file.

*Notice the Parent Product's SKU assigned in the second column, to it's children. When you add your product to this CSV, with it's variations, the format should look identical to this example.

4) Add your Parent & Children SKUs

Add your SKUs, in place of the example SKUs found in the Template CSV, along with your other variation SKUs in rows beneath, if necessary.

5) Assign the Parent SKU to each child

Add the new parent SKU you created into the 'parent_sku' column for each child. Leave the 'parent_sku' column blank for the parent product.

6) Add your variations

Update the variation field for each of the products. For the parent product, you'll want to enter the variant name, such as "Color", "Size" or "Material".

For the variations, you will enter the actual variant value, such as "Blue" or "Small". Be sure to remain consistent with your formatting and capitalization.

7) Save and upload the file

Save this file as a new CSV. Then go to the Import Data page:

Settings > Import Data > Products.

Select your new file and upload it. When completed your products will be grouped together as a variation family.

Grouping Variation Products Together via CSV

Grouping variation products together requires using the Product CSV, and editing some data in your favorite spreadsheet software.

1) Export your data

Go to the Export Products page:

Products > Export > Export Products - All Data

2) Open your product data file

Download and open the CSV file in Excel or some other spreadsheet application.

3) Prepare the file

Delete everything except for the top 3 header rows, and the products you want to group together.

4) Add a Parent

Add a row above the products you want to turn into variations for your new Parent Product and enter a SKU and Product Name.

The Product Name should be similar to the name of the variations, but without the actual variation data.

The SKU can be anything you want, it doesn't matter (but is currently required).

5) Assign the Parent SKU to each child

Add the new parent SKU you created into the 'parent_sku' column for each child. Leave the 'parent_sku' column blank for the parent product.

6) Add your variations

Update the variation_1 field for each of the products. For the parent product, you'll want to enter the variant name, such as "Size" or "Color".

For the variations, you will enter the actual variant value, such as "XL". Be sure to remain consistent with your formatting and capitalization.

7) Save and upload the file

Save this file as a new CSV. Then go to the Import Data page:

Settings > Import Data > Products.

Select your new file and upload it. When completed your products will be grouped together as a variation family.
