Why Are My Product Images Rotated?

Learn to upload images taken using a tablet or smart phone to Sellbrite.

Written by Holland Rocha

If you take product photos with a tablet or phone, you might notice they upload to Sellbrite sideways or upside down, even though they look fine on your device. This happens because of how phones and tablets store image orientation.

Why this happens

Tablet and Smartphones are typically set to rotate the screen to remain in a upright direction regardless of how the phone is held. When an image is captured, there is metadata that is associated with the image that dictates the orientation of your image.

How to prevent it

When you take product photos with a tablet or phone, hold the device in landscape orientation. Start with your phone upright, then turn it 90 degrees to the left before you shoot. This helps make sure the orientation metadata matches what you actually see.

How to fix an image that's already rotated

If you already took the photo and saved it to your computer, you'll need to edit it before uploading it to Sellbrite:

1. Open the image file on your computer.

2. Rotate it 90 degrees to the left, four times in a row (a full 360-degree turn).

3. Save Changes.

Note: An image can look upright on your screen and still have incorrect metadata attached to it. If your uploaded images keep appearing rotated in Sellbrite, this is usually the cause, even if the file looks fine everywhere else.
